Gay Marriage in Australia

Shame, Mr Howard, Shame!

The Federal Government has shown that it does not govern for all Australians, but for the rightwing religious groups by overturning the ACT's Civil Unions legislation. The ACT brought in legislation to provide a level of equality between homosexual and heterosexual couples, without establishing gay marriages.

Further, the ACT bent over backwards [so to speak] to ensure that it's legislation did not conflict with the Federal Government's Marriage Act. And yet, Mr Howard has simply overturned the ACT's civil union legislation with the excuse that it appeared to support gay marriages in Australia.

Mr Howard, no offence, but you are a narrow minded bigot and hypocrit. You have allowed yourself to become a pawn for the religious and rightwing elements in society, to the detriment of not only the gay and lesbian community, but to your legal obligations both under Australia's equality laws and the international conventions that Australia has signed.

Further, you have failed to remember one important thing. You are supposed to represent ALL Australians and are - as a matter of record - OUR employee. We - the citizens of Australia - elected you to govern and represent us, and you have now proven that you are not capable of doing that job.

The next election is not that far away. Gay marriages may not come into fruitition soon, but by opposing the ACT's civil unions legislation [which wasnt about gay marriages], will only bring them closer to reality.

Enjoy your time in power because the next election is not that far away Mr Howard.

James

25 Years On

It’s hard to believe that June 2006 is actually the 25th anniversary of when doctors in San Francisco first reported the mysterious illness that was killing gay men. When they first announced this disease, the doctors concerned had no idea what it was, nor it’s impact on society - both gay and straight.

25 years - very hard to believe that AIDS has been around that long. That is roughly the same time span between the beginning of World War 1 [1939] and the end of World War 2 [1945]. In both time periods, millions of people have died - one by disease, the other by war..
